5 signs your hiring process is losing candidates before interview
If your shortlist is thin despite healthy application numbers, the problem isn't your employer brand — it's probably your process. Care workers are in demand. The good ones have options. If your process is slow, unclear, or unresponsive, they'll take the job that came back to them first.
Sign 1: You're responding to applications in days, not hours. In a competitive market, the first provider to engage a candidate has a significant advantage. If your response time is measured in days, you're losing people to faster competitors before you've even spoken to them.
Sign 2: Applications go unanswered. This is endemic in care recruitment — and it's catastrophic for your employer brand. Every candidate you ghost is someone who will tell their network not to bother applying to you. Even a rejection communicated promptly is better than silence.
Sign 3: Your compliance checklist comes as a surprise. If candidates only find out about DBS, right to work, and reference requirements after accepting an offer, some will drop out. Front-loading compliance information — ideally at application stage — reduces late-stage dropout significantly.
Sign 4: There's no clarity on next steps. After screening, what happens? After interview, when will they hear? Uncertainty breeds anxiety, and anxious candidates take other offers. A clear timeline, communicated proactively, keeps candidates engaged.
Sign 5: Your onboarding start date is more than two weeks after offer. The longer the gap, the greater the risk. Two weeks is long enough for a candidate to have second thoughts, receive a counter-offer, or simply forget why they were excited about the role. Use the time productively — get compliance checks started immediately.
